In early 2010, co-founders De’Sean Jones (tenor saxophone) and Chase Jackson (vibraphone) came together during their time at Oberlin College to create a new group with a specific vision: to present music that was constantly changing, quickly moving, and yet aggressively precise. They compiled an all-star cast of musicians including trumpeter Aaron Janik and guitarist/producer Conrad Reeves (both currently members of R&B First Lady Faith Evans and gospel icon Kierra Sheard’s ensembles), bassist Matt Adomeit (based in Berlin), New Orleans virtuoso pianist Shea Pierre (who performs regularly with Jamison Ross, Donald Harrison, Bill Summers, and Herlin Riley), and New York drummer Austin Vaughn. In mid 2010, KNMDK came together to record their first album entitled Knomadik Reverence, an album which was released on Mack Avenue’s Detroit Music Factory Label in 2014.

Fast forward seven years and KNMDK is now a highly sought-after Detroit, MI based collective, that performs jazz clubs, rock clubs, and music festivals regularly around the world. Since the relocation to Detroit, they have added guitarist Russell Gelman-Sheehan, bassist CJ Alexander (Mariah Carey, Lana Del Rey, Toni Braxton), keyboardist Jon Dixon (Underground Resistance), and drummer Ashton Thomas.  This infusion of new musicians has had a profound impact on the overall sound of the band, adding strong elements of gospel, R&B, and electronic production. KNMDK is preparing to release their long-anticipated LP KNMDK in July of 2017.

“The group moves easily between lean, swinging post-bop passages and dense and slightly raw, guitar-drenched textures and bass and drum beats that sound like souped-up hip-hop, R&B and rock grooves.”

Knomadik Outreach is an important part of KNMDK. It is a worldwide educational outreach initiative used to engage with children in the value of making original, creative music to achieve greater life goals.  Our workshops include exciting and interactive performances as well as focused discussions on the value of open-mindedness in music to develop individuality, as well as communication and collaborative skills.  We tailor these discussions to the age of our students, working on more creativity-based exercises with younger students, to discussing career development strategies for high-school aged students, and providing them with critical scholarship information to find an affordable college education, be it musical or otherwise.  From small midwestern towns in Missourri and Ohio, to large cities like Los Angeles and New York, and to international cities like Beijing and London, Knomadik Outreach has traveled far and wide to pass on their love of music to aspiring and future professionals of all ages.

“A fun performance to watch, it was the musicians’ interactions that showed how the craft and the love of the music are brought together; watching the expressions on the faces of the performers as they faithfully kept step with the lead instrument seemed to make the music sound that much better. There could be no doubt that everyone on the stage was having fun.”

The Knomadik Horns are a Detroit-based horn section comprised of Aaron Janik (trumpet), De'Sean Jones (saxophone), and Lawrence Galloway (trombone). The three met at Oberlin Conservatory of Music and developed a quick connection and musical kinship. Since then they have been fortunate to share the stage with some of music’s greats, including Faith Evans, Gino Vanelli, The Clark Sisters, Kierra Sheard, J Drew Sheard, and countless others. They appear regularly on hip hop, R&B, and gospel albums of artists around the country, and were most recently featured on Kierra Sheard's LED EP, which rose to #1 on the Billboard Gospel Charts, as well as Greater Emmanuel Church's choir record, GEI Live.
